Sizing Considerations:
Classic vs. Skate: Classic poles are shorter than skate poles. A general guideline for classic poles is for them to be 83% of your height measured without boots on and 90% for skate poles.
Skill Level: Beginners should generally opt for slightly shorter poles for better control. More experienced and competitive skiers may prefer longer poles as they require more strength to use effectively.
Rollerski Poles: Rollerskiing poles are typically slightly longer than on-snow poles to account for the height of the rollerskis. A common recommendation is to add 2.5cm to your on-snow pole length.
Tip-to-Top vs. Tip-to-Strap Measurement: Traditionally, poles were measured from the tip to the top of the grip. However, many manufacturers now use a "tip-to-strap" measurement, which is the functional length of the pole from the tip to where the strap exits the handle. This is an important distinction to be aware of when comparing pole lengths.

FIS Rules for Pole Sizing:
For competitive skiers, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has specific rules for pole length. For classic technique, the maximum pole length is 83% of the skier's height while wearing ski boots, measured to the highest attachment of the strap. For the free technique (skate), the maximum pole length is 100% of the skier's height with boots on. You can find more information on the official FIS Guidelines Max Pole Length Classical Technique.
